300 products get duty-free access to Malaysia

The Malaysian government has offered duty-free export facility to 300 Bangladeshi products, including main export earning apparel.
The new regime will come to effect soon, said a senior official of the commerce ministry, requesting not to be named.
Last year Malaysia gave the same facility to 19 products, the official added.
The announcement of duty-waiver for the 300 products was made in October last year, although the declaration is yet to come into force.
Major products on the list of 300 include apparels, handbags, shoes, shampoos, suits, children’s apparels, wallets, hair colourants, golf balls, imitation jewellery, talcum powder, curtains, tablecloths, blankets, bed sheets, shirts, undergarments, lingerie, nightwear, perfumes and mosquito nettings, the official said.
The new offer will help reduce bilateral trade gap that heavily favours Malaysia, he added.
According to Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) data, during the July-March period of the current fiscal year, Bangladesh imported goods worth $1.23 billion from Malaysia and exported goods worth $29.84 million.
In the last fiscal year, the import amount was $1.24 billion, while that of export was $62 million.
“The duty-free facility will benefit Bangladesh. Malaysia might be a good apparel market for us, as its people have a strong purchasing power,” said Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).
He said there are some markets such as Australia and New Zealand that have a little population with strong purchasing capacity.
Syed Moazzam Hossain, president of Bangladesh-Malaysia Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the Malaysian government has already allowed duty-free facility to 300 Bangladeshi products. Now it is the responsibility of the Bangladesh government to move fast on the matter, he added.
“We have potential in Malaysia, but we have to explore it. Bangladeshi garment exporters should explore the Asian countries like Malaysia,” he said.

Showcase Malaysia 2019

INTRODUCTION

Greetings from BMCCI!

Bangladesh-Malaysia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BMCCI) has been working relentlessly with a mission to foster the connectivity between business to business through organizing Business Forums, Trade Fairs, Exchange of Business Delegations, etc. to escalate the trade and investment opportunities between Bangladesh and Malaysia.

BMCCI organized the first Bangladesh-Malaysia Business Forum in 2004 in Dhaka with a grand success. BMCCI organized Malaysia Single Country Trade Fair, “Showcase Malaysia” in 2008, 2011, 2013, 2015 & 2017 in Dhaka respectively. BMCCI also organized “Showcase Bangladesh” in 2010, 2012, 2014 & 2019 in Kuala Lumpur. In 2012 a seminar on “Business Opportunities in Bangladesh” and in 2014, two seminars- one on “Investment Opportunities in Bangladesh: Emphasized on Economic Zones and Public Private Partnerships (PPP)” and the other on “Investment Opportunities in Bangladesh: Infrastructure and other Potentials” were arranged in Kuala Lumpur. In 2016 BMCCI organized a day long Trade & Investment Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with enormous success.

At the end of this year BMCCI is planning to organize the “6th Showcase Malaysia 2019- Explore Emerging Bangladeshin Dhaka on 3-5 December, 2019 at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is being supported by MATRADE, MASSA and the High Commissions from both the countries.

The premier objective of this showcase is to emphasize Malaysia as a solid and compelling wellspring of diversified products & services and making a wide network for the Malaysian Businessmen with the local business community. This occasion will likewise provide an incredible gateway to attract a large community of businessmen, specialists, guests, professionals, consumers, experts from Bangladesh and is relied upon to accomplish their motivation to extend Malaysia as their favored destination and hotspot for higher education, healthcare, tourism and travel industry, property venture, vehicles and automobiles, development and construction, building materials, petroleum engineering, banking and financial services, etc. BMCCI believes, Bangladesh has emerged as one of the most promising emerging markets in the world with all financial & “TO DO BUSINESS” indicators and Malaysian investors are beginning to recognize it as a market to keep an eye on. Currently, Bangladesh has the most investor-friendly regulatory regime in South Asia. The country has a trainable, enthusiastic, hardworking and low cost (even by regional standards) labor force suitable for any industry.

BMCCI invites Malaysian business leaders and exporters to participate in the showcase and strengthen the business relations with their Bangladeshi counterparts.

BIDA launches massive hunt for entrepreneurs in Bangladesh

BIDA launches massive hunt for entrepreneurs in Bangladesh

The investment promotion authority has launched an innovative campaign across Bangladesh to bring out potential entrepreneurs for fostering investments and generating jobs.
Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority or BIDA Kazi M Aminul Islam said people irrespective of their educational background can drop their innovation ideas to them if they want to be an entrepreneur.
A jury board comprising members from the government and private sector as well as successful entrepreneurs will select potential entrepreneurs from those ideas for further training, the BIDA boss said at a press meet while launching the campaign on Wednesday.
At least 24,000 such entrepreneurs will receive month-long extensive training to become an entrepreneur under the Entrepreneurship and Skill Development Project or ESDP. It is an initiative to implement Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s special drive to make Bangladesh a nation of entrepreneurs and innovation, the BIDA boss said.
Interested entrepreneurs can register by calling the toll free number 09613112211 or via Facebook by visiting www.facebook.com/ESDPBIDA or by visiting www.esdp.gov.bd.
Riding on a labor-intensive economy, Bangladesh has emerged as the second largest apparel exporter.
The BIDA chairman said the future will be totally different. It will be based on knowledge and technology.
“We’ll need entrepreneurs who will create jobs. We are working to create those entrepreneurs,” he said. Registration and training will go simultaneously as the project will continue for two years.
“Our target is to complete this in two years. But it can be expanded. Top of all, our work will not be limited within two years. It’ll be a continuous process and we want to create a rippling effect in the society,” Kazi Aminul said, adding that they would inspire youths who lack courage despite having potentials to be entrepreneurs.
Money will not be a problem, he said, as the government has allocated Tk. 1 billion in the budget for funding innovative entrepreneurs.
He said they are also working on a policy so that more funds can be generated to help start-ups.
“Virtually we will encourage all kinds of entrepreneurships. Those who have new plans, different plans are welcome to submit their plans using any means. We are ready to welcome them,” he said.
“We will create a database. We’ll contact with everyone who will send their plan and train those who have fire inside,” he said.
BIDA has already set up physical facilities in all 64 districts in Bangladesh with provisions of training, mentoring and networking.
